The Telangana government has permitted the introduction of 65,000 eco-friendly auto-rickshaws within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits of Hyderabad.
Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced the issuance of GO 263, which lifts the long-standing restriction on new auto permits in the GHMC and ORR zones. As per the new guidelines, the government will allow 20,000 electric autos, 10,000 LPG autos, and 10,000 CNG autos. In addition, 25,000 existing diesel and petrol autos will be eligible for retrofitting to cleaner fuel systems.
However, the ban on fresh permits for diesel and petrol autos—as well as the transfer of existing ones—will continue to remain in force.
The initiative aligns with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s focus on combating rising pollution and improving urban mobility. The eco-permit scheme is expected to provide direct livelihood opportunities to thousands while promoting cleaner alternatives in public transport. Officials highlighted that the move will enhance last-mile connectivity, especially in expanding urban pockets, while helping Hyderabad transition to a more sustainable and environment-friendly transportation network.
