After the rains comes Pneumonia and Flu

27-08-2025 12:00:00 AM

As monsoon rains flood cities like Hyderabad, a quieter threat raises respiratory infections such as influenza and pneumonia. Vulnerable groups infants, elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses face heightened risk.

High humidity encourages mold and fungal growth, irritating airways. People crowd indoors during heavy rains, increasing virus transmission in poorly ventilated spaces. Floods disrupt routines, reduce immunity, and delay care. Seasonal viral strains and bacterial complications can worsen outcomes, especially in children and seniors.

Children get coughs lingering after a cold due to post-viral airway sensitivity or bacterial pneumonia. Ginger and turmeric can help symptoms, but vaccination and timely treatment are essential. You should use a mask especially in damp, crowded homes or if someone is ill.

Recognizing illness early

Flu symptoms like sudden fever, body aches, sore throat, fatigue and cough are early symptoms. Pneumonia signs: persistent cough, fever, chest pain, rapid breathing and watch for red flags: breathlessness, confusion, or bluish lips and seek urgent care.

Stay protected

Vaccination: Annual flu shots; pneumococcal vaccine for high-risk groups.

Indoor health: Ventilate, reduce dampness, avoid smoking.

Hygiene: Hand washing, cough etiquette, masks if needed.

Nutrition & rest: Support the immune system.

Timely care: Seek prompt help for vulnerable individuals with respiratory symptoms.
