In a major breakthrough for Indian healthcare, the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) successfully carried out a robotic-assisted telesurgery between Wuhan in China and Hyderabad in India, covering a distance of nearly 3,900 kilometres.
The procedure was led by Dr. Syed Md. Ghouse, Director of Robotic and Minimal Access Urological Surgery at AINU, who remotely performed a robotic ureteric reimplantation on a 57-year-old Hyderabad patient suffering from recurrent ureteric obstruction caused by a lower ureteric stricture.
According to hospital officials, the patient had earlier received temporary relief through stenting, but the blockage returned. Doctors then opted for an anti-reflux ureteric reimplantation procedure to restore normal urine flow.
The surgery was conducted using advanced robotic technology with less than 100 milliseconds latency, enabling real-time precision and seamless control during the operation. A twin team of urology surgeons based at AINU Hospital in Hyderabad and Tongji Hospital in Wuhan coordinated the procedure.
AINU Managing Director Dr. Mallikarjuna C said robotic surgery has significantly improved precision in complex procedures, while tele-proctoring through 5G technology is expected to expand access to specialised healthcare in remote regions.
Dr. Ghouse described the achievement as a milestone in cross-border robotic surgery, stating that technology is redefining surgical care by enabling specialised procedures to be performed across continents with high precision.
