What is Blue Flag certification?

The Blue Flag certification, awarded by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), is a globally recognized eco-label given to beaches that meet stringent environmental, safety, and cleanliness standards. Rishikonda Beach was among the first eight beaches in India to receive this recognition, marking it as one of the country’s premier coastal destinations.

*  Andhra Pradesh has a coastline of approximately 974 kilometers (606 miles), making it the second-longest coastline in India after Gujarat.

*  Potential to develop beaches is enormous in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore and Tirupati.

* There is a need to conduct a survey that conform to stipulated norms and identify suitable locations for beaches along the coastline.

Encouraged by the Blue Flag certification bestowed on Rishikonda beach the Andhra Pradesh Government is keen on replicating the success story to other beaches on its coastline and in the process improving tourism. Minister Durgesh expressed optimism that more coastal areas will soon meet the criteria, further boosting the state’s reputation as a leading eco-tourism destination.

Considerable efforts by Visakhapatnam district administration, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA), the police, and the forest department played a part for Rishikonda to get the Blue Flag certification. Minister Durgesh commended the efforts of Visakhapatnam Collector Harendhira Prasad and all other involved agencies for their dedication to the project.

Rishikonda Beach originally received the Blue Flag certification as part of India’s initiative to promote eco-friendly tourism destinations. However, the certification was temporarily revoked due to lapses in environmental and waste management protocols. Recognizing the significance of this status, Minister Durgesh prioritized swift action, ensuring that the necessary improvements were made to reclaim the prestigious label.

To secure the Blue Flag reinstatement, authorities focused on Strengthening beach security and visitor safety protocols, implementing advanced water purification systems, improving waste disposal and recycling mechanisms, regulating traffic and maintaining cleanliness around the beach, and enhancing environmental awareness among tourists and locals. Minister Durgesh emphasized that maintaining these high standards will be an ongoing priority, and officials have been instructed to ensure Rishikonda Beach remains a model of sustainable tourism.
