Back to School: How to prepare your child after the summer break

20-06-2025 12:00:00 AM

As the long, lazy days of summer wind down, the back-to-school season creeps up on each and every parent. Transitioning from a relaxed summer schedule to the structured environment of school can be a challenge—not just for kids, but for parents too.

However, with a little planning and patience, you can help your child ease back into the school routine with confidence and enthusiasm.

Reset the routine early

Start adjusting your child's sleep and wake times at least a week before school begins. Gradually shift bedtime earlier by 15-30 minutes each day and establish a calming bedtime routine that includes reading or quiet time. This helps regulate their internal clock and ensures they’re well-rested when school starts.

Reintroduce structure

Begin incorporating structure into their day by scheduling meal times, study periods, and even short practice sessions for schoolwork. A light morning routine, like making the bed or organizing a backpack, can help ease them into school-mode.

Rekindle the learning mindset

Reading books together, visiting a museum, doing puzzles, or practicing basic math skills in everyday situations can make a big difference. For older children, reviewing last year’s notes or discussing subjects they will encounter in the new grade can help build excitement and confidence.

Talk about school positively

Speak positively about school, teachers, and learning. Share your own school memories or talk about what they might look forward to like seeing friends again, participating in fun classes, or joining new activities.

Address anxieties early

It's normal for children to feel nervous about going back to school. Talk openly about their concerns. Are they worried about making friends, handling homework, or fitting in? Listening without judgment and offering reassurance can help ease these fears.

Get organized together

Let your child be part of the back-to-school preparation process. Shopping for school supplies, choosing a backpack, and setting up a study space at home can give them a sense of ownership and excitement.

Reinforce independence

Encourage your child to take on small responsibilities, such as packing their bag, organizing their school supplies, or picking out their clothes the night before. These tasks boost confidence and help establish a smoother morning routine.

Limit screen time gradually

Summer often brings a spike in screen time. A week or two before school resumes, start reducing screen time and replacing it with offline activities arts and crafts, outdoor play, board games, or reading.

Reconnect with friends

Social connections are a big part of school life. Help your child reconnect with classmates by arranging a playdate or attending community events.

Celebrate the new beginning

The start of a school year is a milestone—acknowledge it! Whether it's a special breakfast, a photo by the front door, or a new book bag, small celebrations can turn back-to-school jitters into a joyful moment.
