‘Bankipur bypoll in Bihar, lesson taught by youth’

Andhra Pradesh Congress leader Kolanukonda Sivaji on Monday linked the BJP's defeat in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar to the alleged lathi-charge on students protesting the NEET paper leak at Jantar Mantar.

In a statement, the APCC vice-president said Bihar's youth had united to "teach a lesson" to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the police action against students.

Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor won the Bankipur bypoll by defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by over 19,000 votes. The seat, held by the BJP since 1995, fell vacant after former MLA Nitin Nabin resigned on becoming the party's national president.

Sivaji demanded that Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah apologise for the alleged lathi-charge on students.

He also congratulated voters in Datia, Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress retained the Assembly seat after Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP's Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,016 votes. Sivaji urged people to support Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's campaigns inside and outside Parliament.
