BC Assertion in Telangana—What Does It Signal?

The Backward Class(BC) consciousness in Telangana is on a rise since last few years. What was once confined to a few platforms has now spread widely — from village panchayats to legislative halls, from student movements to legal forums. This is no longer just a slogan. It represents a deeper social awakening, a political direction and a movement for self-respect. The spirit of “we deserve our share” is now being asserted with clarity and confidence.

Now, this change is clearly visible in the legal profession as well — traditionally considered an elite domain. In the recent Bar Council elections, 9 out of 23 seats were won by BC candidates (including two Muslim BCs). In Bar Associations, BC representation reached nearly 60%. This reflects increased political awareness, organizational strength, and competitive capability among BC candidates. The role of platforms like the OBC Lawyers JAC, along with leaders such as T. Raju and Ponnam Devaraju and forums like BC Intellectuals Forum has been crucial in building this momentum.

However, challenges remain-Internal divisions, sub-caste rivalries, co-option by political parties, lack of a clear unified ideology. If these are not addressed,  the movement risks losing momentum. Without unity, numerical strength alone cannot translate into power. In the coming years, Telangana’s political equations may undergo significant transformation. If BCs consolidate as a collective force, they can move beyond being kingmakers to becoming kings — from enabling power to exercising power.
