Beijing blocks Meta from acquiring Manus

Beijing: China has blocked a proposed acquisition of AI startup Manus by Meta, citing regulatory concerns over foreign ownership, sources said.

The National Development and Reform Commission, the country’s planning agency, said it was prohibiting a foreign acquisition of Manus and had directed all parties involved to withdraw from the deal. The regulator did not specifically name Meta in its statement.

Manus, which has Chinese roots but is based in Singapore, specialises in advanced AI systems, including enterprise automation and data-driven solutions. The company has attracted investor interest for its proprietary models and cross-border operations, positioning it as a strategic asset in the fast-growing AI ecosystem.

The decision underscores Beijing’s tightening scrutiny of cross-border technology deals, particularly those involving companies with domestic links. Sources said the move reflects broader concerns over data security, intellectual property and control over critical technologies, amid rising geopolitical tensions and increasing restrictions on technology transfers.

Separately, China-based DeepSeek has slashed prices for its new AI model, intensifying competition in the sector. The company said the price cuts aim to expand market access and attract developers, undercutting rivals significantly.

Analysts said the move could trigger a pricing war in the AI space, forcing global players to reassess cost structures and accelerate innovation to remain competitive.
