BRS MLAs on Friday walked out of the Assembly in protest against what they considered disrespectful comments made by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy about opposition members during the Question Hour. The Legislative Assembly began with Question Hour and Congress MLAs, including Balu Naik, Shankaraiah, and Malreddy Rangareddy, raised questions on the Musi Rejuvenation project. Other party MLAs, including former minister T Harish Rao, AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, and BJP MLA Payal Shankar, also sought clarifications with follow-up questions.
As Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu began addressing the concerns, the Chief Minister intervened, mentioning that he had personally assessed the project and would respond to the members’ queries. He noted that the detailed project report (DPR) was still in preparation.
“After the DPR is finalised, we will present it to all MLAs, especially those from the Greater Hyderabad area, at the Chief Minister’s Office,” Revanth Reddy stated. He highlighted that the first phase of work, covering 21 km from Osmansagar to Bapu Ghat and from Himayatsagar to Bapu Ghat, along with water diversion from the Godavari, would cost Rs 7,000 crore. This work is set to begin within three months and should wrap up in two years.
The Chief Minister emphasised the rapid urbanisation in the region, noting that 55 percent of Telangana's population resides within the Outer Ring Road (ORR). He criticised opponents for attempting to connect the project to real estate motives.
Targeting the opposition, Revanth Reddy made pointed comments that sparked immediate backlash. He remarked that certain opposition members had “venom in their stomachs, which is more dangerous than pollution,” suggesting they be sent to Vikarabad for treatment.
He also asked the Speaker to collect input from all MLAs regarding the rehabilitation of those displaced from the Musi riverbanks.
BRS MLAs quickly reacted by standing up in protest. MLA Harish Rao called on the Speaker to uphold the members’ rights and requested a chance to speak. While the Speaker allowed AIMIM’s Akbaruddin Owaisi to address the Assembly, BRS MLAs insisted on their opportunity, but the Speaker denied them.
Later, Minister D Sridhar Babu defended the Chief Minister, asserting he hadn't singled anyone out in his critique. In response, Harish Rao strongly pushed back, asserting that the Leader of the House should act responsibly and avoid making insulting remarks.
The Speaker interrupted Harish Rao, prohibiting any further criticism of the Chief Minister, which led to a heated exchange. As protests continued and the Speaker moved on to the next question, BRS MLAs staged a walkout.
