Coalition government revives power sector: Minister Ravi Kumar

Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Monday said the coalition government has successfully revived the state’s power sector, which he alleged had been crippled during the previous YSRCP regime. He attributed the turnaround to comprehensive electricity reforms undertaken under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Reacting to the latest Annual Integrated Rating and Ranking of Power Distribution Utilities released by the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) under the Union Ministry of Power, the minister expressed satisfaction over the improved national ratings secured by Andhra Pradesh power distribution companies (DISCOMs).

The minister said the higher ratings reflect the restoration of financial discipline, operational efficiency and governance standards in the power sector. “The state electricity system, which was pushed to the brink for political gains earlier, has now regained stability and credibility,” he said.

Gottipati Ravi Kumar alleged that the previous government had burdened DISCOMs with massive debts, weakened institutions and disrupted the sector’s long-term sustainability. He said the coalition government, immediately after assuming office, made the power sector a priority area and initiated wide-ranging reforms.

He noted that significant reduction in Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses, improvement in billing and collection efficiency, and timely release of government subsidies have collectively strengthened DISCOM finances. These measures were instrumental in securing improved national rankings.

The minister also lauded the efforts of power department employees, engineers and field-level staff, stating that their dedication and commitment played a crucial role in achieving the turnaround. “Their hard work and renewed morale have made this improvement possible,” he said, urging them to maintain the same momentum to further enhance DISCOM performance.

Reiterating the government’s long-term vision, Ravi Kumar said providing quality, reliable and uninterrupted power supply to domestic, agricultural and industrial consumers remains a core objective of the coalition administration. He further disclosed that the government is working towards reducing electricity tariffs by ₹1.19 per unit over the next three years, balancing financial sustainability with consumer relief. “Our approach is to strengthen the power sector economically while simultaneously reducing the burden on the public,” the minister said.

The Energy Minister described the improved PFC ratings as a major milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s development journey and said continued reforms would ensure a stable, affordable and growth-oriented power sector for the future.
