The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a 61-day ban on marine fishing across the state, effective from April 15 to June 14, as part of its annual conservation measures. The Fisheries Department has issued formal orders enforcing the seasonal prohibition to protect marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable fish stocks.

The ban coincides with the critical breeding season for fish and other marine species, typically spanning April to June. Officials said the temporary halt on fishing allows marine life to reproduce undisturbed, ultimately leading to higher fish yield in the long term. Authorities have urged fishermen to strictly adhere to the regulations, warning that violations will invite stringent penalties. Under the enforcement rules, those found venturing into the sea during the ban period will face a Rs 5,000 fine, seizure of fishing nets, and cancellation of boat registration for up to one year. Surveillance along the coastline is expected to be intensified to ensure compliance.

Recognising the economic impact of the fishing halt, the state government has rolled out support measures for affected families. Under the ‘Matsyakara Sevalo’ scheme, each eligible fisherman family will receive Rs 20,000 as financial assistance during the ban period. The process of identifying beneficiaries will begin from April 17 through village and ward secretariats.

In addition to direct financial aid, the government continues to provide diesel subsidies for fishing boats, along with concessions on essential equipment such as engines, nets, and boats. Notably, a 40% subsidy on motor engines is being extended to reduce operational costs for fishermen.

The government has also significantly enhanced insurance coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Compensation for accidental death of fishermen has been increased from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, while an additional Rs 2 lakh relief is available under labour welfare provisions in case of death or accidents. Officials clarified that to avail these benefits, fishermen must be registered with cooperative societies and possess valid fishing licences and Aadhaar identification. The annual fishing ban, while restrictive in the short term, is widely seen as a crucial step towards long-term ecological balance and livelihood sustainability for coastal communities in Andhra Pradesh.
