Olive Sarvodaya Hospital recently held a Health Awareness Seminar highlighting the often-overlooked link between diabetes and mental health. Led by Dr. Viquasuddin, Consultant Physician, the session emphasized holistic approaches to diabetes care—one that addresses both physical and emotional well-being.
‘Diabetes management isn't just about medication and sugar levels,’ Dr. Viquasuddin explained. ‘Patients silently carry stress, anxiety, burnout, and even depression, all of which impact their quality of life.’ He highlighted that while younger diabetics may struggle with isolation, older patients often feel drained from years of ongoing care.
India’s diabetes burden has surged from 26 million in 1995 to over 100 million today (ICMR–INDIAB, 2023), with one in four patients also facing mental health issues. Urban lifestyles, inactivity, and loneliness further worsen the crisis.
Dr. Viquasuddin called for integrated care involving mental health professionals, strong family support, and open doctor-patient dialogue. The seminar concluded with a powerful message: effective diabetes care today requires more than medicine—it demands empathy, understanding, and support for both mind and body.
