Kerala ads revive debate after earlier Bihar controversy over misuse of public funds

The Telangana government’s decision to release advertisements about its welfare schemes in other states has once again sparked political debate. In a latest development, advertisements in Kerala media highlighting Telangana government schemes have become controversial. Opposition parties have recalled a similar episode in Bihar earlier and have sharply criticised the move.

Political analysts, however, point out that issuing advertisements in other states is not entirely new. Governments often promote cultural, tourism and spiritual programmes across the country through such campaigns. Publicising major festivals, tourism destinations or religious centres in other states has been a common practice in the past.

The controversy now arises because the advertisements are appearing during election periods in other states. This timing has raised political questions and intensified criticism of the Telangana government’s approach.

Opposition leaders argue that while the state government frequently claims there is a shortage of funds for welfare programmes and development works, it is simultaneously spending large sums of public money on advertisements outside the state. The recent advertisements in Kerala have therefore triggered fresh criticism about the government’s priorities.

Criticism over Telangana government advertisements in other states is not new. During the elections in Bihar earlier, advertisements referring to the caste census also created a major political discussion. At that time too, allegations were made that public funds were being used to send political messages.

Now, similar advertisements highlighting welfare schemes implemented in Telangana have appeared in Kerala, which is also heading toward elections. This has once again raised questions in political circles about whether such campaigns are purely promotional or carry political intent.

Public Concern over use of Funds

The issue has also sparked broader debate about the use of public funds. Critics argue that taxpayers’ money collected in Telangana is being spent on publicity in other states, which they describe as unnecessary expenditure.

The controversy comes at a time when there are already allegations regarding delays in implementing certain welfare schemes and shortages of funds for programmes benefiting farmers, students and other sections. Against this backdrop, spending crores of rupees on publicity campaigns has led to growing dissatisfaction among sections of the public.

Political observers note that while governments may want to promote their achievements nationally and attract investment, there must be a balance between welfare spending and publicity.

Another issue being raised by analysts is whether it is appropriate to promote schemes in other states when questions remain about their implementation within Telangana itself. They argue that the government should first ensure effective implementation of schemes in the state before promoting them elsewhere.
