A stroke can be life-threatening when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or bleeding occurs within the brain. Seeking immediate medical attention at the onset of symptoms is crucial, as delays in treatment can cause severe brain damage and lead to permanent disability, said Dr. Vikas Agrawal, Senior Consultant Neuro Physician at Medicover Hospitals, Secunderabad. An ischaemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel supplying the brain. In eligible patients, thrombolytic treatment administered within the recommended time window can help dissolve the clot and restore blood flow.

Some patients may also require a specialized procedure to remove the clot directly from the affected blood vessel. Stroke care involves not only saving the patient's life but also helping them regain independence and return to daily activities as much as possible. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, when required, can help improve movement, communication, and the ability to perform everyday tasks.

Early and appropriate rehabilitation can support functional recovery and enhance the patient's quality of life. Emphasizing the importance of timely intervention, Dr. Vikas Agrawal stated that every minute matters in a stroke.
