Fertiliser sales in India rose by 3.8 per cent to 31.16 million tonnes during April–December 2025, largely supported by a sharp increase in imports, even as domestic production dipped marginally, according to provisional data released by the Fertiliser Association of India (FAI).

Urea sales increased from 30.02 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year to 31.16 million tonnes in the current fiscal period. Domestic urea production stood at 22.44 million tonnes, while imports surged by 85.3 per cent to 8 million tonnes, helping meet demand during peak crop nutrition months.

Production of NP and NPK fertilisers (excluding DAP) recorded a strong growth of 13.1 per cent to 9.27 million tonnes. Imports of these fertilisers jumped sharply by 121.8 per cent to 3.29 million tonnes. Despite this rise, sales of complex fertilisers remained broadly stable at 11.74 million tonnes.

Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) production declined by 3.9 per cent to 3.03 million tonnes during the period. However, imports rose by 45.7 per cent to 5.95 million tonnes. DAP sales stood at 8 million tonnes, slightly lower than 8.33 million tonnes reported in the year-ago period.

Muriate of Potash (MOP) sales increased by 5.3 per cent to 1.77 million tonnes, even as imports fell by 22.4 per cent to 2.14 million tonnes. Single Super Phosphate (SSP) also showed positive momentum, with production rising 10.3 per cent to 4.43 million tonnes and sales increasing 13.1 per cent to 4.71 million tonnes.

FAI Chairman S. Sankarasubramanian said the data highlights the sector’s ability to ensure nutrient availability through a mix of domestic production and calibrated imports. Director General Suresh Kumar Chaudhari added that the changing nutrient mix reflects a gradual shift toward more balanced fertilisation practices.
