From Ramayan to Shrimad Bhagavatam: Sagar Pictures Begins a New Cinematic Era

Sagar Pictures Entertainment is all set to reimagine India's timeless mythological epics for a new generation on the big screen. The legendary Sagar family, which created television history with iconic classics like Ramayan and Shri Krishna, is now bringing its rich spiritual and cultural legacy to cinemas on an unprecedented scale. The studio has officially announced Shrimad Bhagavatam: Part One – Vishnurata, the first installment of an ambitious seven-part live-action cinematic saga based on the revered Shrimad Bhagavatam.

For decades, the Sagar family has played a defining role in bringing Indian mythology and spirituality closer to audiences. The late legendary filmmaker Dr. Ramanand Sagar created Ramayan, one of the most celebrated television series in Indian history, followed by Shri Krishna, which also became a cultural phenomenon. These stories became much more than television shows, they became an integral part of India's cultural memory. Now, Sagar Pictures Entertainment is taking that legacy to theatres with a grand cinematic vision through Shrimad Bhagavatam.

The Shrimad Bhagavatam is one of India's most expansive spiritual texts, filled with countless characters, stories, philosophies, and devotional traditions. Instead of compressing this vast narrative into a single film, the makers have envisioned it as a seven-film cinematic universe. Vishnurata will serve as the opening chapter, laying the foundation for an epic journey that will gradually explore the many dimensions of the Bhagavatam while giving every major character and storyline the space they deserve. The project is being described as seven films, one spiritual epic, and one cinematic journey connecting generations.

The film is directed by Akash Sagar Chopra and Amrit Sagar, the grandsons of Ramanand Sagar. Representing the next generation of the Sagar family, they are now entrusted with carrying forward one of India's most celebrated storytelling legacies in a contemporary cinematic format.This is not merely about continuing a family tradition. It is about redefining mythological storytelling with modern filmmaking techniques, large-scale production values, and an immersive theatrical experience while staying true to the spiritual essence of the original stories.

Director Amrit Sagar brings significant filmmaking experience to the project. His Hindi film 1971 won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, establishing him as a filmmaker with both creative and technical expertise. Along with Akash Sagar Chopra, he aims to blend the Sagar family's storytelling heritage with a fresh cinematic perspective for today's audiences.Shrimad Bhagavatam is being mounted as a massive live-action spectacle. The film's launch ceremony took place at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where major portions of the production and shooting are also being carried out.The makers are creating elaborate sets, extensive production design, large-scale live-action sequences, breathtaking cinematography, and cutting-edge visual effects to recreate the world of ancient India on a grand cinematic canvas.
