The Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phase 2 & 3, aimed at meeting the city’s growing water needs and reviving the Musi river, is set to begin works soon. The project, costing Rs. 7,360 crore, includes constructing a master balancing reservoir and water treatment plants. On Saturday, HMWSSB MD Ashok Reddy visited the Ghanpur site of the reservoir and instructed officials to expedite all related works.

The project involves laying two parallel pipelines over 56 km from Ghanpur to Osman Sagar. During the site visit, officials discussed measures to avoid delays in challenging areas like road crossings and tunnels. The Ghanpur reservoir will have a capacity of 80 million litres, and water treatment plants will also be built there.

Under Phase 1 of the scheme, 10 TMC water from the Ellampalli project is already being supplied to the city. The new phases will bring an additional 20 TMC, of which 17.5 TMC will cater to Hyderabad’s drinking water needs, and 2.5 TMC will be used for Musi river rejuvenation and restoration of twin reservoirs.

The project also includes building pump houses, substations, a 3,000 mm diameter main pipeline from Mallanna Sagar to Ghanpur, and a water treatment plant at Ghanpur and Shamirpet with 1,170 MLD capacity. Works will continue up to Muthangi, with completion targeted within two years. Phase 2 & 3 will ultimately supply 300 MGD of water to the city. Project Director TV Sridhar, CGM Mahesh Kumar, and other officials participated in the inspection and planning of the ongoing works.
