In a significant step toward strengthening the medical profession in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Daggumati Srihari Rao officially assumed charge as Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) at the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences on Wednesday. Soon after taking charge of the Medical Council he said that it would function as a strict regulatory authority, ensuring accountability and swift action on malpractice complaints.

Among the key initiatives announced was the decision to award gold medals to medical students who excel academically at both the university and college levels. In a major administrative reform, the APMC will now require all doctors in the state to renew their registration once every five years. To simplify the process, the council will introduce an online slot booking system. After verification, registration certificates will be dispatched via registered post, reducing delays and improving accessibility.

Dr. Srihari also addressed the issue of foreign medical graduates seeking registration in Andhra Pradesh. He stated that registrations will be permitted strictly as per the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC). While some states have adopted relaxed norms, Andhra Pradesh is currently evaluating similar possibilities to ensure fairness without compromising standards.

The council is also considering easing credit hour requirements for doctors above the age of 70, recognizing their years of service and practical limitations. In addition, Dr. Sriharirao warned that stern action would be taken against individuals practicing medicine using fake degrees or forged documents, stating that such malpractice will not be tolerated.
