On the occasion of World Disability Day on Wednesday, Muttineni Veeraiah, Chairman of the Telangana Handicapped Corporation, extended greetings to every disabled person and their families across the Telugu states. Veeraiah detailed a series of reforms being undertaken by the Telangana government aimed at economic self-reliance and holistic development for the disabled.
Key initiatives include a 5% reservation in higher education, 4% in court jobs, and opportunities in administrative roles within the police department. One groundbreaking measure, according to Veeraiah, is GO No. 89, which extends free motorized scooters, battery wheelchairs, business empowerment carts, and other aids to those with 40% benchmark disability.
In just one year, the corporation is set to distribute aids to 8,000 disabled individuals, including 2,000 motorized scooters, he mentioned. He also said that through GO No. 34, disabled government employees received promotions without transfers, extending benefits to parents of severely disabled children. He urged all states and the center to emulate Telangana's initiatives, ensuring comprehensive empowerment and dignity for the disabled.
