Metro India News | Hyderabad

A sudden and intense downpour resembling a cloudburst struck Hyderabad on Thursday evening, flooding multiple areas and throwing the city’s daily life into chaos. The torrential rain caused widespread waterlogging, with commuters stranded and traffic coming to a halt. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast continued thunderstorms through the night, warning that certain areas could receive up to 80–100 mm of rainfall in just one hour.

Localities such as Kukatpally, Moosapet, Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Padmarao Nagar, Khairatabad, Koti, Malakpet, Dilsukhnagar, Erragadda, Panjagutta, Hayathnagar, and Aljubail Hamlet were hit hard. Streets turned into streams in low-lying areas like Petlaburj near Government City College, PBEL City, Bandlaguda Jagir, Ramanthapur, Langar Houz, Nanal Nagar, and KCP Junction.

Netizens expressed concern, fear, and frustration online. One user tweeted, “Crazy rain at Ramanthapur!!! #Hyderabad,” while another warned, “Due to a sudden downpour of heavy rain in Hyderabad city this evening, water has accumulated in many low-lying areas.” In a heartfelt message, one user posted, “Praying for the rain that bring Goodness and khair Ya rab. Have mercy on my State and Hyderabad. Ameen.”

Frustrated citizens took to social media to highlight recurring drainage failures. One tweet read, “Requesting @GHMCOnline to de-silt the manhole near Sai Temple in Attapur. Water rises two feet in 20 minutes.” Another tweet echoed the concern: “Requesting @ GHMCOnline to de-silt the manhole from Sai Temple towards Balaji Dhaba, Attapur. Two feet of water collects here within 20 minutes of rain.”

The Telangana Weatherman warned of near cloudburst conditions, posting, “Few parts of Hyderabad City are expected to receive 80–100 mm of rain in just one hour… My hands are shivering while I type this.” In response, Hyderabad Traffic Police and HYDRAA launched dewatering operations. Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi held an emergency meeting with GHMC officials, urging swift action. Emergency helplines were activated as the city remained on alert overnight.
