Metro India News | Hyderabad
Hyderabad was battered by heavy rains on Monday, resulting in severe waterlogging and widespread traffic disruptions. Several key areas, including the Secretariat bus stop and city central zones, were submerged, with major traffic snarls on the Tank Bund-Secretariat route.
Khairatabad, Lakdikapul, Himayatnagar, and Narayanguda saw knee-deep water, bringing vehicles to a halt. Rainwater accumulation under the Khairatabad metro station disrupted movement on the Khairatabad-Punjagutta stretch. A private school near the Water Board office was flooded, leaving hundreds of students stranded.
Flooded roads, overflowing manholes, and stranded vehicles were reported across the city, particularly on the Telugu Thalli and Narayanguda flyovers. Citizens inundated the GHMC helpline with complaints of stagnant water and poor drainage.
In response, GHMC deployed 350 monsoon teams, and special Hydra squads were sent to affected low-lying areas like Somajiguda, Panjagutta, and Khairatabad. Boats were kept ready for emergency rescues, and field officials were ordered to be on-site for relief operations.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy and Executive Director Mayank Mittal directed all departments to stay prepared for the next 72 hours. Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) were stationed in flood-prone zones to monitor conditions, prevent road overflow, and ensure safe drinking water.
Citizens were warned not to open manhole covers due to the risk of serious accidents. Supervisors have been deployed at critical locations, and warning signs installed across inundated zones as authorities work round the clock to restore normalcy.
