The iconic Telugu Thalli Flyover in Hyderabad has been officially renamed as the Telangana Thalli Flyover, following a proposal by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Standing Committee on September 24, which was later approved by the state government. The flyover connects Lower Tank Bund to the Secretariat and now features new signboards reflecting its updated name.
Originally inaugurated on January 22, 2005, by then-Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy under the Congress government, the flyover was named “Telugu Thalli” to symbolize the cultural heritage of the Telugu-speaking people. The renaming under the current Congress-led government marks a shift toward highlighting Telangana’s identity and regional pride, a move that has sparked discussions on cultural and administrative symbolism in the city.
The decision aligns with ongoing efforts to update and localize public infrastructure names to reflect the state’s unique history and culture since its formation in 2014. Alongside the flyover renaming, several other landmarks and government initiatives are being reviewed for similar changes to strengthen Telangana’s cultural representation in public spaces.
The GHMC’s proposal also comes amid broader urban development initiatives, including road widening projects and infrastructure upgrades near key city areas like RK Puram, aimed at improving traffic flow and civic amenities. The Telangana Thalli Flyover now stands as a modern symbol of the state’s identity while continuing to serve as a vital transport link in Hyderabad.
