India has achieved a coal production milestone of 1 billion tonnes (BT) for the second consecutive year, underscoring the country’s focus on energy security amid global uncertainties triggered by the West Asia crisis.
According to the coal ministry, the landmark was reached on March 20, 2026, reflecting sustained and coordinated efforts across the sector. The achievement highlights the contribution of various stakeholders, including public and private players, in maintaining consistent output levels despite volatile global energy conditions.
Officials said the steady rise in coal production has played a crucial role in meeting the country’s growing energy demand. It has also supported the power sector by ensuring adequate fuel supply, leading to record coal stock levels at coal-based thermal power plants. This has helped prevent supply disruptions and maintain stable electricity generation across regions.
The government attributed the success to improved planning, efficient execution, and stronger coordination throughout the coal value chain. Enhanced monitoring mechanisms and policy support have further streamlined operations, enabling higher productivity and timely dispatch of coal.
The coal ministry reiterated its commitment to building a stable and transparent ecosystem for the sector. It noted that proactive policy measures, regular performance reviews, and continuous engagement with stakeholders have been key to ensuring reliable coal availability for industries and power producers.
The milestone is also aligned with India’s long-term vision of strengthening domestic energy capabilities.
