Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged Indian industries, manufacturers and start-ups to make top quality the defining identity of products made in the country, stating that excellence must become India’s global benchmark.

Addressing the nation in the 130th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the time had come to move beyond the old “chalta hai” mindset and adopt a culture where quality is non-negotiable. He stressed that every product carrying the Indian label should reflect world-class standards and inspire confidence across global markets.

Modi said that whether it is textiles, technology, electronics or packaging, Indian manufacturing must aim for zero defects. He called on businesses and entrepreneurs to take personal responsibility for improving quality, adding that continuous improvement should be a shared national resolve.

The Prime Minister highlighted that India is being closely watched by the world, and this global attention brings with it a significant responsibility. He said prioritising quality is essential not only for economic growth but also for strengthening India’s credibility as a manufacturing and innovation hub.

Reflecting on India’s start-up journey, Modi lauded the energy and creativity of young entrepreneurs who have driven innovation over the past decade. He noted that since 2016, India’s start-up ecosystem has expanded rapidly, making the country the third-largest start-up hub in the world.

According to the Prime Minister, Indian start-ups are no longer limited to traditional business models and are now working in highly advanced and futuristic sectors. He pointed out that innovation is thriving in areas such as artificial intelligence, space technology, nuclear energy, semiconductors, mobility solutions, green hydrogen and biotechnology.

Modi said that almost every emerging sector today has an Indian start-up contributing new ideas and solutions. He expressed pride in the country’s youth and extended his appreciation to those who are part of start-ups as well as to those who aspire to build their own ventures in the future. The Prime Minister also greeted citizens on the occasion of National Voters’ Day and Republic Day, reminding people of their collective role in nation-building. He said India’s progress depends not only on policies and investments but also on the mindset of its people, especially when it comes to maintaining high standards.

Reiterating his earlier call for the “Zero Defect, Zero Effect” initiative, Modi said the goal is to enhance product competitiveness while ensuring that manufacturing processes remain environmentally sustainable. He added that focusing on quality and sustainability together will help accelerate India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation and achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister urged citizens and industries alike to adopt quality as their only mantra, emphasising that better quality today than yesterday should be the guiding principle for India’s future growth.
