India’s financial system is entering a critical phase as rapid advances in artificial intelligence reshape both cybersecurity and economic strategy. Concerns have intensified following the emergence of Mythos, an advanced AI model developed by Anthropic, prompting high-level government discussions on safeguarding the country’s digital banking infrastructure.

A recent meeting chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, alongside IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, brought together top banking leaders to assess potential vulnerabilities. The focus has shifted from innovation to risk mitigation, reflecting growing global unease around powerful AI systems capable of both defence and disruption. At the centre of the debate is Mythos’s defining feature—its ability to explain its reasoning.

Unlike conventional AI models that simply generate outputs, Mythos provides insights into how it arrives at conclusions.  According to industry experts, this capability makes it an effective diagnostic tool for identifying software vulnerabilities. Major global technology firms are already leveraging such systems to strengthen cybersecurity frameworks. However, this same strength presents a double-edged sword.

The ability to analyse and explain complex systems could be exploited by malicious actors seeking to identify weaknesses in banking infrastructure. As a result, financial institutions—long considered prime targets for cyberattacks—are under increasing pressure to upgrade their defences. Experts warn that banks must strike a delicate balance: harnessing AI for protection while preventing its misuse.

The government’s push for pre-emptive cybersecurity measures reflects the urgency of this challenge.  Institutions are being urged to adopt advanced monitoring systems, strengthen firewalls, and rethink risk frameworks in response to AI-driven threats. Despite these concerns, India’s position in the global AI landscape remains strong.
