IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers resigns

Pieter Elbers has stepped down as chief executive officer of India’s largest airline IndiGo, ending a little over three years in charge marked by rapid growth and a severe operational crisis. The board of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. accepted his resignation with immediate effect, and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will take interim charge until a new CEO is appointed.

Elbers, who took over as CEO in September 2022, oversaw one of the most significant growth phases in the airline’s history. Under his leadership, IndiGo surpassed the $10 billion revenue milestone and expanded its fleet to more than 440 aircraft — a dramatic increase as it consolidated its position as the dominant low‑cost carrier in India’s booming aviation market. The airline also placed a record setting order for 500 Airbus A320 family jets, one of the largest single orders in commercial aviation history, signalling ambitions to deepen international reach and capacity.

However, the latter part of his tenure was overshadowed by IndiGo’s worst ever operational disruption in December 2025, when the carrier struggled to adapt to new flight crew duty and rest regulations imposed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
