KTR slams Delimitation: ‘Don’t punish Southern States for progress

BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao, at the Delimitation all party meeting, strongly opposed the Centre’s proposed delimitation, calling it a threat to southern States' representation, economic contributions, and governance achievements. He accused the BJP-led government of long-standing discrimination against the region, warning that the policy could centralize power and funds, harming the federal spirit.

KTR argued that southern States, excelling in population control and economic growth, are being unfairly penalized with reduced parliamentary seats. He proposed alternatives, including maintaining Lok Sabha seats while increasing MLA seats for better governance and considering economic progress in representation. Highlighting that southern States contribute 36% to India’s GDP despite only 19% of its population, he suggested proportional representation based on economic output.

He criticized the Centre for selectively implementing delimitation in Jammu & Kashmir while sidelining Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, accusing it of political bias. He warned that the policy could lead to authoritarianism, with a few States dictating national decisions. KTR called for unity among southern States, drawing parallels with Telangana’s struggle for statehood and Tamil Nadu’s federalist legacy.

Emphasizing that southern States are not against supporting underdeveloped regions but reject discrimination, he urged immediate action, stating history will judge their silence. He opined that rewarding progress, not punishing South, is crucial for India’s superpower ambitions.
