In a groundbreaking pediatric surgery, doctors at Little Stars & She Women and Children’s Hospital successfully removed a large tumor from the windpipe of an 8-month-old baby boy, marking the first successful thoracoscopic procedure of its kind in Hyderabad.

The infant, from Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, was admitted with severe respiratory distress, persistent cough, and fever. Initial evaluations elsewhere failed to pinpoint the cause. At Little Stars & She, advanced imaging revealed a 4.5 x 4.3 x 3.2 cm tumor in the upper lobe of his left lung, compressing his airway and causing critical breathing difficulties.

Given the high risk of traditional open surgery in such a young patient, Dr. Satish Ghanta and his team opted for thoracoscopy, a minimally invasive keyhole surgery. During the procedure, the tumor was found to be even larger than expected, measuring 6 x 4 x 4 cm, originating from the main bronchus. Despite its size and location, the surgical team successfully removed the mass with minimal trauma.

Post-surgery, the baby was closely monitored in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with oxygen support, IV fluids, and antibiotics. Within four days, his oxygen saturation reached 98%, and he was discharged in stable, healthy condition.

Dr. Satish Ghanta said, “This case posed unique challenges due to the baby’s age and tumor size. Thoracoscopy allowed us to remove the tumor safely, avoiding the high risks of open surgery. This achievement sets a new standard for pediatric care in Hyderabad.”

The successful surgery highlights the advanced capabilities of Little Stars & She Hospital, offering hope for children with complex, life-threatening conditions.
