Malkajgiri Police have cautioned citizens about a rising cyber fraud involving malicious QR codes, commonly known as “quishing.” Cybercriminals are reportedly using WhatsApp and other social media platforms to circulate fake messages that appear as wedding invitations, promotional offers, courier updates, and KYC verification requests.
These messages contain QR codes and prompt users to scan them to view details or complete actions. Police explained that once scanned, the QR code may install malware on the mobile device or redirect users to harmful websites without their knowledge. This enables cyber offenders to gain unauthorized access to smartphones, including banking applications, passwords, and other sensitive personal data.
Authorities noted that in several cases, victims have suffered immediate financial losses after their bank accounts were compromised within minutes. The scam typically begins with a trusted-looking message, making it difficult for users to identify the threat initially.
Citizens are strongly urged not to scan QR codes received from unknown or unverified sources. They are also advised to verify messages before responding and avoid interacting with suspicious links or invitations shared online.
Officials emphasized that awareness and caution are essential to prevent such cyber frauds and urged the public to remain vigilant while using digital platforms.
