Medicover Cancer Institute successfully treated a rare and highly aggressive kidney cancer in an 8-month-old baby girl, giving the infant a new lease on life. The child was brought to the hospital with alarming symptoms including abdominal swelling and persistent vomiting after feeding. Concerned about the rapidly worsening condition, the parents sought expert medical attention at Medicover Cancer Institute, where specialists immediately initiated a detailed evaluation.
Advanced imaging scans revealed a large tumor occupying the left kidney. Initially suspected to be a Wilms’ tumor — the most common kidney cancer seen in children — the case later turned out to be far more complex and rare. Under the leadership of Dr. Sarita Srivastava, the infant underwent a multimodality treatment protocol followed by a specialized surgical procedure performed by a multidisciplinary pediatric oncology team. In a heartening outcome, the child continues to remain completely healthy and cancer-free even 18 months after completion of therapy, with follow-up scans showing no evidence of recurrence.
Speaking on the successful outcome, Dr. Sarita Srivastava said that managing such rare cancers in infants requires timely diagnosis, precision treatment and coordinated multidisciplinary expertise.
