The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) has  expressed concern over the deterioration of Srisailam Dam and directed the Andhra Pradesh government to undertake immediate repairs on the plunge pool area of the Srisailam dam and complete them by May 31. The NDSA also designated Andhra Pradesh as the owner of the Srisailam dam. A report submitted by an expert group a year ago has come to light recently.

In February 2024, an expert committee headed by NDSA member (disaster management) Vivek Tripathi visited the Srisailam project. The report was submitted that month itself. According to that report, it was estimated that there are weak patches between the underground slabs under the reservoir and there is a risk of the dam's foundations losing protection if the distance between the joints increases. Moreover the huge pit at the bottom of the dam is 120 metres deep and is likely to extend below the foundations of the dam.

In view of the safety of the reservoir, it has been recommended that appropriate studies should be conducted immediately and steps should be taken for repairs. NDSA chairman Anil Jain on Thursday held a virtual review meeting from Delhi on the basis of a complaint lodged by Telangana ENC (General) Anil Kumar about the repair work of Srisailam project and the danger involved.
