District Collector Anudeep Durishetty has announced that the historic Buddhist stupa at Nelakondapalli in Khammam district will be developed into a prominent heritage and tourism destination. The initiative follows directions from Telangana Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy. On Thursday, the Collector, accompanied by Buddhavanam Special Officer Mallepalli Laxmaiah, inspected the site and reviewed current progress and upcoming plans. The government has already sanctioned Rs 2.5 crore for the initial phase of development.

Key features planned under the project include a museum, a Buddhist meditation hall, sculptures depicting Buddha’s life, and an architecturally rich entrance gateway. Officials have been instructed to use traditional Buddhist architectural elements in all structures. Additionally, the project includes connecting the nearby Balasamudram Lake to the site and introducing boating facilities. Other proposals include the development of a restaurant, a convention centre, and theme parks to enhance the tourism experience.

A special heritage consultant has been engaged to guide the design and execution. The district administration is also drafting a master plan to link Nelakondapalli with Phanigiri and Nagarjunakonda, forming a Buddhist tourism circuit. Ten acres have been earmarked for the stupa, with further land requirements being assessed. The Collector’s inspection included senior district, tourism, and panchayat officials.
