State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has successfully capped the Mori-5 well in Andhra Pradesh, bringing a blowout situation under control within a record five days, the company said on Saturday. The swift response is being seen as a major operational achievement in handling well-control emergencies.
The Mori-5 well, located in ONGC’s onshore asset in Andhra Pradesh, experienced an uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons on January 5, 2026. The incident occurred during routine service operations being conducted by contractor Deep Industries Ltd when the well was temporarily under servicing, leading to a blowout.
Following the incident, ONGC immediately activated its crisis management protocols. All related operations in the surrounding area were suspended as a precautionary measure, and specialised well-control teams along with advanced equipment were mobilised to contain the situation. The company said safety of personnel and protection of the environment were treated as top priorities throughout the operation.
Importantly, no fatalities or injuries were reported during the incident or the subsequent response operations. ONGC also stated that continuous monitoring ensured that environmental risks were minimised while the capping work was underway.
In an official statement, ONGC said it had “successfully established well control at Well Mori-5, completing the capping operation in a record time of five days, marking a significant achievement in blowout response and operational excellence.”
With the well now safely capped, ONGC said all field-level operations related to the Mori-5 incident have been concluded. The company added that no further operational updates are expected and reiterated its commitment to safety, environmental protection, and strict operational discipline across all its oil and gas activities.
