Jagadgirigutta Police, along with the Kukatpally CCS team, arrested five members of an organised criminal gang involved in kidnapping, impersonating police officers, extortion, wrongful confinement, and cheating. One accused remains absconding.

According to police, the gang targeted businessman Kavuri Purnachandra Rao, 42, of Kukatpally, on May 18 near Shobodhaya Colony in Jagadgirigutta. The accused intercepted him while he was travelling on a motorcycle and falsely claimed to be police officers investigating a criminal case registered against him in Haryana.

Believing their claims, the victim accompanied them and was subsequently confined in a vehicle. The gang seized his mobile phone, ATM card, cash, and banking credentials. To make their story convincing, they arranged a fake video call with a person posing as a Haryana police officer.

The victim was taken to Suryapet, where the accused withdrew and transferred money through ATMs, PhonePe, and online banking platforms. They extorted a total of ₹5.26 lakh before assaulting him and abandoning him in an isolated area.

Police recovered mobile phones, laptops, an air pistol, a country-made pistol, fake police uniforms, forged identity cards, handcuffs, fake government documents, SIM cards, and vehicles. Investigations revealed the accused had met in prison and continued criminal activities after release. Further efforts are underway to arrest the absconding accused and identify additional victims.
