A rare and high-risk pregnancy involving acute pancreatitis and uncontrolled gestational diabetes was successfully managed by a multidisciplinary team at Medicover Hospitals, leading to the safe delivery of preterm twins and the healthy recovery of both mother and babies. The expectant mother was admitted at around 30 weeks of pregnancy with acute pancreatitis, a rare but serious condition that occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 5,000 pregnancies.
The condition was further complicated by uncontrolled gestational diabetes, significantly increasing the risk to both mother and babies.In view of the situation, an emergency Caesarean section was performed at 32 weeks of gestation. The procedure resulted in the successful delivery of preterm twins both of whom were discharged along with their mother in stable condition.
Dr. Shalini Narayan, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Medicover Hospitals mentioned that fetal monitoring and coordinated teamwork enabled the doctors to intervene at the right time and ensure a positive outcome for both mother and babies. Dr. Ravinder Reddy Parige, HOD – Neonatology & Pediatrics, Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals informed that with advanced NICU support and continuous monitoring, both twins recovered well and were able to go home healthy with their mother.
