2.1-kilometre ropeway, costing Rs 2.46 crore, will connect the base of the hill directly to the fort’s summit
The centuries-old Ramagiri Fort in Peddapalli district is set for a major transformation as the central government has approved a ropeway project to enhance connectivity and promote tourism. Situated on the scenic Ramagiri hillocks near Begumpet village in Kamanpur mandal, the fort is known for its historical significance and breathtaking views but has long faced accessibility challenges for visitors.
The proposed 2.1-kilometre ropeway, costing Rs 2.46 crore, will connect the base of the hill directly to the fort’s summit, eliminating the steep climb that currently restricts visitor numbers. An additional Rs 2.5 crore has been allocated for developing surrounding infrastructure, including approach roads, viewing points, and basic visitor facilities.
Once operational, the ropeway is expected to transport around 1,100 visitors per hour, providing safe and comfortable access for tourists and devotees alike.
Ramagiri Fort, built in stone with multiple bastions, covers a vast area and is surrounded by natural beauty, including rare plant species and medicinal roots. Historically, the fort was under the control of Gundaraja of Manthani and Edaraja of Ramagundam before being conquered by Kakati Prola II, bringing Polavasa, Manthani, and Ramagundam under the Kakatiya dynasty. In the 14th century, Musunuri Kapayanayaka appointed Muppabhupala as ruler of Sabbinadu with Ramagiri as his capital. The Bahamani Sultan Ahmed Shah I invaded in 1433, followed by Qutb Shahis, Mughals, and finally the Asaf Jahis and their Deshmukhs.
Officials said, “The ropeway under the Parvatmala scheme will make Ramagiri Fort accessible to thousands of visitors, while also boosting local employment and small businesses,” highlighting the project’s cultural and economic impact.
With government approval secured, Ramagiri Killa is set to emerge as a major cultural, spiritual, and heritage destination.
