Underground Cabling Boost
The Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC) has offered low-interest loans at 9% to the Telangana government, marking a major step to upgrade the State's electricity supply network. This financing, with attractive terms, enables affordable improvements for greater reliability and efficiency statewide.
REC will initially provide Rs 4,000 crore for laying an Underground Electric cable network in Hyderabad. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) nears completion, allowing tenders soon, with works starting in three months. The project targets key areas like Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central, and Hyderabad South, converting 33 kV, 11 kV, and LT overhead lines to underground systems, using aerial bundled cables in narrow lanes for cost efficiency.
The Telangana Cabinet approved the GHMC-wide underground cabling system on November 25, 2025, at an estimated Rs 14,725 crore. Inspired by Bengaluru's model, it categorizes cables into types including T-fibre. The government also sanctioned Rs 4,051 crore for the initial phase under Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL), as per a Government Order by Energy Principal Secretary Navin Mittal. This initiative will boost power quality, attract investments, and spur economic growth in the metro region.
REC also prepares to offer additional loans for power transmission networks, including underground cabling in other Telangana areas, to fortify the grid further.
Third Discom from April
The third Distribution Company (Discom) is set to begins operation from next Financial Year i.e. from April 1, 2026. Energy officials stated that pending dues from government departments will transfer to this new entity. This move should enhance credit ratings of the existing two Discoms, easing borrowing for more transmission network development.
