Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) has handed over a 500 KLD model decentralised combined Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to the Siripuram Gram Panchayat in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, marking a major step towards sustainable wastewater management in rural textile clusters.
Developed with financial assistance from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the plant is designed to treat textile dyeing effluents and domestic wastewater using energy-efficient, low-chemical biological and bioelectrocatalytic processes. The project, described as a "Lab to Loom" initiative, aims to promote water conservation, pollution control and resource reuse.
CSIR-IICT Director Dr D Srinivasa Reddy said the model demonstrates how indigenous research can directly benefit rural communities and has strong potential for replication across India's textile and handloom clusters. CSIR-NEERI Director Dr S Venkata Mohan highlighted the plant's innovative, gravity-assisted treatment system and its role in advancing circular economy objectives.
The facility was formally transferred to the Gram Panchayat for community ownership and operation in the presence of Nakrekal MLA Vemula Veeresham, DST Scientist Dr G.V. Raghunath Reddy, district officials, scientists and local representatives.
