A special school has been introduced in Karimnagar district to cater to the educational needs of children of migrant labourers, particularly those from financially poor  and migrant labour communities. One prominent example of this initiative is the special school established at Zilla Parishad High School in Gattubuthkur village, Gangadhara Mandal. This school which serves children of migrant labourers primarily from Odisha and other states, is the brainchild of District Collector Pamela Satpathy.

She recently visited the school to assess the facilities, review the children’s learning skills, and ensure the school meets the needs of its students, with the collector promising additional support to enhance its operations. Reading materials and textbooks have been specially sourced from the state of Odisha. To teach Odia, one volunteer from Odisha, and another local volunteer have been appointed recently.

This school is part of a broader effort to address the educational challenges faced by children of migrant workers, who often accompany their parents to work sites such as brick kilns, construction projects, and other labour-intensive industries prevalent in Karimnagar district. A number of local non-migrant children have also been enrolled at the school. The brick kiln owner provides a tractor every day to help the children reach school.

These children typically face significant barriers to education, including poverty, lack of access to schools near work sites, and the transient nature of their families’ livelihoods. Authorities recently conducted a special health camp to check the students’ hemoglobin levels and raise awareness about hygiene. Plans are underway to organize a dental camp for them as well.
