Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has made candid and striking remarks about the state’s financial condition, calling for urgent fiscal discipline and cooperation from all stakeholders, particularly government employees.
In his address at an awards programme on Monday, CM emphasised the gravity of Telangana’s economic crisis, revealing that financial institutions are currently refusing to sanction new loans to the state, likening the treatment of Telangana’s requests to that of fraudulent borrowers.
The Chief Minister made an emotional appeal to government employees and union leaders, urging them not to fall prey to political agendas. Responding to the ongoing RTC JAC strike, he questioned, “Is this struggle directed at the people of Telangana?” and reminded employees that his government is, for the first time in a decade, ensuring that salaries are paid on the first day of every month despite severe financial constraints. Revanth Reddy extended an open invitation to union leaders for discussions, urging them not to destabilise the system through strikes.
“We are not rulers; we are public servants,” he said, emphasising that strikes during a financial crisis hurt not just the government but the people of Telangana. Revanth cautioned employee unions against becoming tools in the hands of political parties .Telangana is under financial strain, with monthly salary obligations exceeding Rs 7,000 crore. The previous administration left behind Rs 8,500 crore in unpaid retirement benefits alone
The Chief Minister revealed that the former government left behind massive arrears under the guise of free electricity, unpaid bills to Singareni Collieries for coal purchases, and claims of completed irrigation projects while withholding payments to contractors. The previous administration reportedly secured loans at 11% interest — a move CM Reddy called “outrageous and reckless.”
