Many medical students today face mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Experts emphasize that with timely support, students can overcome these issues and thrive in their careers. Parents, friends, and institutions play a crucial role in recognizing and addressing early signs of distress.

On World Mental Health Day, Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar, hosted an awareness program led by Dr. Gayatri Kamineni, COO. Around 100 medical students and their parents attended. Dr. Kamineni stressed that even future doctors are vulnerable to mental health issues.

‘There’s pressure to excel, and many assume doctors can handle everything—but they’re human too,’ she said. She urged families and peers to notice signs like isolation, loss of appetite, or silence, and to offer support without judgment.

Dr. Gautami Nagabhirava, Senior Psychiatrist, highlighted that the transition from scoring high in school to facing the tough demands of MBBS can be overwhelming. ‘Parents must understand this shift and support their children emotionally instead of focusing only on marks,’ she noted.

Dr. Kankipati Varudhini, Co-founder of Inner Connect, pointed out that one in three medical students may suffer from serious issues like depression or fear of failure. ‘Unlike physical illnesses, mental health issues are invisible and often ignored. Open communication within families is key,’ she said.
