Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said India is targeting $2 trillion in exports over the next five years, with a strong focus on boosting commodities, indigenous manufacturing and the government’s Swadeshi agenda under the vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.
Speaking at a national conclave of trade leaders at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Goyal said the upcoming Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav would become a major platform to promote India-made goods, expand exports and strengthen import substitution across sectors. The two-day conclave was organised by the Confederation of All India Traders, where the minister also launched the official website for the event.
The Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav, scheduled to begin in 86 days (August 12 to August 15, 2026) is designed as a large Swadeshi fair showcasing Indian products and services. Organisers expect nearly 1,000 businesses to participate, highlighting sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, MSMEs, handicrafts, logistics and manufacturing.
Goyal said India’s exports had already touched $863 billion this year, registering nearly 5% annual growth.
The government has now raised the export target to $1 trillion for the current year alone, while negotiations for free trade agreements with 38 countries are underway to provide Indian exporters better market access and lower tariffs. The minister said India was rapidly building capabilities in value-added agricultural products, capital goods and medical devices. He highlighted emerging industrial clusters in cities such as Rajkot, Ludhiana, Pune and Visakhapatnam, where MSMEs are expanding manufacturing strength and export competitiveness.
According to Goyal, the government’s strategy is not only aimed at increasing exports but also reducing dependence on imports through domestic production. He said schemes like (PLI were helping industries scale operations and improve global competitiveness. The minister also stressed the importance of branding, packaging and marketing for Indian commodities and products in global markets.
