Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is spearheading a protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on Thursday (August 6), demanding Presidential assent for two key reservation bills passed by the Telangana Legislature. The bills seek to enhance Backward Class (BC) reservations to 42% in education, government jobs, and local bodies, as recommended by the SEEEPC caste survey.

The two legislations—The Telangana BC Reservation in Education and Employment Bill, 2025 and The Telangana BC Reservation in Local Bodies Bill, 2025—were unanimously passed in March 2025 with support from all major political parties. However, it has been awaiting Presidential assent for over three months. The State Cabinet also issued an ordinance on July 29 to implement the enhanced quotas in compliance with High Court directives.

Over a thousand Congress leaders and workers, including ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Seethakka, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and BC welfare leaders, have joined the protest in Delhi. A special train carrying party workers left Telangana to participate in the agitation. Minister Ponnam Prabhakar urged all political parties and civil society to support the movement, accusing the BJP of attempting to block the bills by objecting to Muslim inclusion in the BC category—an allegation denied by the BJP.

On August 7, CM Revanth Reddy, accompanied by senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, will seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu to submit a formal memorandum in support of the BC bills. The Telangana Congress reiterated that this fight is for social justice and constitutional rights, calling for unity beyond party lines to secure long-pending benefits for BC communities.
