Telangana to hold seed melas in all mandals

Agriculture Director Dr B. Gopi appealed to farmers across the State to participate in large numbers in the seed melas being organised at their nearest Rythu Vedikas

The Agriculture department will organise Seed Melas at Rythu Vedikas in every mandal across all 33 districts of Telangana from July 27 to 29. Keeping in view the prevailing El Niño conditions, the department will set up four to five special counters at each Rythu Vedika to promote the cultivation of alternative crops that require less water.  Quality seeds of these crops will be made available to farmers during the mela.

Experts from prominent agricultural institutions, including Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU), Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTU), the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), the Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR), and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), will be present. They will offer farmers scientific advice on selecting crops, best cultivation methods, and implementing climate-resilient farming techniques tailored to the prevailing weather. The special counters will also stock high-quality seeds endorsed by these universities and research bodies.

Furthermore, Agricultural Extension Officers (AEOs), Mandal Agriculture Officers (MAOs), Assistant Directors of Agriculture (ADAs), District Agriculture Officers (DAOs), and officials from the Horticulture department will provide technical guidance. This assistance will cover crop and seed selection, cultivation techniques, and strategies for effective water management. Agriculture Director Dr B. Gopi appealed to farmers across the State to participate in large numbers in the seed melas being organised at their nearest Rythu Vedikas.

He urged them to make use of the opportunity by consulting scientists and agriculture officials, selecting crops suitable for their local conditions and purchasing quality seeds recommended for the season.
