What began as a passion for preserving India’s rich craft traditions has evolved into a remarkable innovation journey for Telugu designer, researcher and academician Dr. Rambabu Muppidi, who has now secured his 36th Indian Design Patent.

His latest patent, the “Bamboo Craft Sconce,” is an eco-friendly decorative lighting product inspired by traditional bamboo craftsmanship. Developed after extensive field studies among bamboo artisans in the North Godavari region, the design combines indigenous knowledge with modern product development. The innovation reflects Dr. Muppidi’s efforts to create sustainable, market-oriented products while promoting traditional crafts.

The achievement comes shortly after he secured his 35th Indian Design Patent for the “Green Eco Robo Toy,” a product that blends sustainability, creativity and contemporary design. Together, the two innovations highlight his commitment to transforming traditional ideas into modern products with commercial potential. A Senior Faculty member at the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), Dr. Muppidi has built an impressive portfolio of 36 design patents covering bamboo craft products, toys, jewellery cases, handicraft-inspired designs, leather accessories, decorative products and lifestyle items.

Apart from innovation, he has been actively supporting artisan communities, conducting research, mentoring students and promoting the use of CAD-based design technologies. Inspired by initiatives such as Vocal for Local, Make in India and Viksit Bharat 2047, Dr. Muppidi plans to showcase several of his patented creations at the IHGF Delhi Fair 2026, highlighting how traditional Indian crafts can be transformed into globally competitive products through innovation and technology.
