When a government employee passes away while in service, the loss to their family is  immeasurable. Recognizing this profound emotional and financial shock, the government has over the decades established a compassionate safety net designed to absorb some of the financial burden left behind. Yet, a troubling gap exists due to a widespread lack of awareness, many grieving families continue to repay liabilities they are legally exempt from. The Government issued orders nearly three decades ago waiving off all types of loans and their associated interest for Government Employees and Teachers who passed away while in service.

However, due to a lack of awareness, many employees and their families have been unable to avail themselves of these financial benefits. These orders were specifically designed to provide financial relief to the families of deceased government employees. The Government has issued various orders from time to time to waive off loans and interest taken for housing, vehicle purchases, weddings and festivals.

Government Order No. 171, Finance and Planning Department, dated 4.7.75: This order waives off loans interest and festival advances taken for house construction, house purchase, and marriage. Government Order No. 401, Finance and Planning Department, dated 14.11.90  waives off interest on additional loans taken for house construction and repairs. Government Order No. 167, Finance and Planning Department, dated 4.10.99 allows for the waiver of interest on loans taken for purchasing cars, motorcycles, mopeds and personal computers. Government Order No. 154, Finance and Planning Department, dated 2.9.2000 specifically mentions the waiver of interest on car and motorcycle loans.

These Government orders stand as a testament to the state's commitment to protecting the families of those who dedicated their lives to Public Service. However, a policy is only as effective as its awareness. It is the responsibility of the line departments, unions and colleagues to ensure that a bereaved family is immediately informed of these rights. By ensuring these orders are implemented, we can transform abstract policy into real, timely relief safeguarding the welfare of families when they need it most.
