Tushar Kumar, a 23-year-old Labour councillor, has become the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom after taking charge as Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in eastern England.

A former political science student at King's College London, Kumar joined the town council in 2023 and earlier served as Deputy Mayor.

He said he was “truly humbled” by the honour and pledged to focus on community engagement, local charities and encouraging young people to enter public service. Kumar has chosen WD6 Food Support as his mayoral charity.

He previously worked as a Policy Advisor and Research Analyst. Kumar also said he hoped his journey would inspire more students to participate actively in leadership and local governance.
