US names Ajay Banga to Gaza redevelopment board

Indian-American World Bank Group President Ajay Banga has been named to the newly constituted ‘Board of Peace’, an executive body set up under US President Donald Trump’s comprehensive plan for the redevelopment of Gaza and an end to the ongoing conflict. The White House announced the appointments on Friday, describing the board as a high-level team bringing together expertise in diplomacy, development, infrastructure and economic strategy.

Alongside Banga, the board includes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan, and US Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel. The administration said each member would oversee specific portfolios critical to Gaza’s stabilisation and long-term recovery, including governance reform, regional engagement, reconstruction, investment mobilisation and large-scale funding.

The White House added that more members to both the Executive Board and the Gaza Executive Board would be announced in the coming weeks as the plan moves into its next phase. The Board of Peace is expected to work closely with regional and international stakeholders to coordinate reconstruction efforts and attract global investment into the war-ravaged enclave.

To address security concerns, Major General Jasper Jeffers, Commander of the US Special Operations Command Central, has been appointed Commander of the International Stabilisation Force. He will be responsible for security operations, overseeing comprehensive demilitarisation measures and ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and reconstruction materials across Gaza.

The administration reiterated that the United States remains fully committed to the proposed transitional framework and will work in partnership with Israel, key Arab nations and the broader international community. Trump has urged all parties to cooperate with the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, the Board of Peace and the International Stabilisation Force to ensure swift implementation of the plan.

The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza has been described as a cornerstone of phase two of Trump’s 20-point roadmap, which aims to achieve lasting peace, stability and economic revival in the region. According to the plan, if both sides agree to its terms, the war would end immediately. Israeli forces would withdraw to an agreed line, military operations would be suspended, and battle lines would remain frozen until conditions are met for a complete, staged withdrawal.

The initiative also outlines a Trump-led economic development plan to rebuild and revitalise Gaza. It proposes the creation of modern urban centres, consideration of international investment proposals and the establishment of a special economic zone with preferential trade terms. The plan states that no one will be forced to leave Gaza, while those who choose to stay will be supported with opportunities to rebuild and create a better future.
