Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy on Friday reviewed the performance of a 1 MLD (million litres per day) pilot sewage treatment project that uses Japan's advanced Bio-Lace technology to clean polluted drains, lakes, and water bodies. The review meeting was held at the HMWSSB Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) premises in Fatehnagar and was attended by representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), technical experts from Japan-based TBR Corporation, and senior Water Board officials.

MD Ashok Reddy said the Bio-Lace technology, during its pilot implementation in Hyderabad, demonstrated significant improvements in water quality, indicating that the technology could serve as an effective and environmentally friendly solution for controlling pollution in urban drains.

Officials explained that, compared to conventional sewage treatment plants, the Bio-Lace system offers several advantages-It requires 70 to 85 percent less land, reduces electricity consumption by more than 50 percent, eliminates the need for chemical treatment, involves lower maintenance costs and generates significantly less sludge, making it a sustainable and cost-effective alternative. The MD instructed officials to conduct a detailed assessment of the pilot project's results and examine the feasibility of extending the technology to other parts of Hyderabad if the outcomes continue to remain positive.
