Women residents of Gunrock Enclave Phase-II have submitted a formal appeal to the Cantonment Board (SCB), urging authorities to address growing traffic hazards, deteriorating internal roads and safety concerns for senior citizens and children in the colony.

In a representation addressed to the board, the residents highlighted the sharp rise in vehicular movement, including commercial vehicles, on Roads No. 08 and 12 throughout the day and even late into the night. They expressed concern over the disturbance caused to residents and the safety risks posed to pedestrians, particularly senior citizens who regularly use these roads for morning and evening walks.

“Even after 10:00 PM, there is continuous vehicular movement causing disturbance and posing safety & health concerns to the residents,” the letter states. It adds that a few senior citizens have already met with minor accidents due to heavy and rash driving. To mitigate these issues, the residents have requested permission to operate gates on Roads No. 08 and 12 for better traffic regulation.

They have assured the authorities that the gates will remain open daily from 6:45 AM to 10:00 PM, one gate will continue to operate after 10 PM under the supervision of security personnel and that emergency vehicles, ambulances, and essential services for Gunrock Enclave and neighboring colonies will face no obstruction.

The residents also drew attention to the poor condition of internal colony roads, which have not been properly repaired or carpeted for a long time despite previous requests. They have urged the Cantonment Board to sanction and execute the repair and carpeting works at the earliest to ensure resident convenience and safety.

In a citizen-friendly suggestion, the group has proposed that selected internal roads be declared as “Walkers’ Paradise” during designated hours. With many retired senior citizens residing in cantonment colonies and limited availability of parks, the initiative aims to provide safer spaces for walking and exercise, free from heavy traffic.

Cantonment contract workers stage protest

Contract workers employed in the Military Sub-Areas under the Secunderabad Cantonment Board staged a dharna in front of the board office on Wednesday, protesting the prolonged delay in payment of their wages. The protest was organized by the Secunderabad Cantonment Board Contract Workers Union (AITUC). Speaking on the occasion, AITUC State Deputy General Secretary M. Narasimha strongly criticized the contractor, M/s Singh Solutions, for repeatedly delaying wage payments.

He pointed out that as per the Contract Labour Act, wages must be paid by the 7th of every month, but the contractor has been consistently delaying payments. He  described the contractor’s excuse — that salaries were delayed due to a request for change of company name — as unacceptable and unjust. He warned that if the Cantonment Board authorities fail to take immediate action against the contractor and ensure timely payment of wages, the union would file a formal complaint with the Labor Commissioner.
